Universiade gold for Moldova

Zalina Marghiev won the hammer throw gold medal on Friday, August 19, at the World Universiade in Shenzhen, China. This is Moldova's first medal in the competition, Info-Prim Neo reports. Zalina won the contest with a throw of 72.93 m in her second attempt, setting a new national record for Moldova. Her older sister Marina finished 8th with 65.83 m. Marghiev sisters are now preparing for the World Athletics Championships to start on August 27 in the South Korean city of Daegu. Due to Zalina's achievement, Moldova now ranks 31st in the general medal standings. Earlier in the Universiade Moldovan athletes obtained their best results in weightlifting. Artiom Pipa, Cristina Iovu and Gheorghe Cernei were all 4th in their respective weight categories. At the previous Universiade, Moldova obtained three medals in athletics. Ion Luchianov won the gold medal in 3,000 m hurdles, Olga Cristea obtained the silver medal in 800 m, while Vladimir Letnicov got the bronze in triple jump.
