Victor Ponta: Traian Basescu shouldn’t have promised Moldova scholarships and gas pipeline

Romanian Premier Victor Ponta didn’t like it that President Traian Basescu, during his official visit to Moldova earlier this week, made promises that are not within his direct remit, such as the provision of scholarships and the construction of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, IPN reports, quoting the webpage of the Romanian TV channel “Digi24”.

Victor Ponta said that he no longer wants to see a President who speaks about things that he cannot do. “I didn’t like it when the President of Romania, while in Moldova, spoke about all kind of things that are not within hit remit: that he will give scholarships. The head of state has nothing to do with scholarships. This is within the competence of the Ministry of Education and the Government. He said he will build the gas pipeline. It is the Government that will construct it. I met with Prime Minister Leanca. This is nonsense,” said the Romanian Premier.

Victor Ponta informed he will also pay a visit to Chisinau, on August 27, when Moldova marks the Independence Day. “I will go on business. The President went there with nice feelings and I praise him for this,” said the Premier.

While in Chisinau on a visit on July 17, Traian Basescu said that Romania will offer more scholarships to Moldovans, that the works to build the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline will start in August and that Romania will continue to provide money to Moldova from the grant of €100 million promised in 2010.
