Vlad Filat: BEM has sufficient liquidity to ensure depositor safety

Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who is also the chairman of the National Commission for Financial Stability, in the February 21 sitting of Parliament said that Banca de Economii (BEM) has sufficient liquidity to ensure the safety of depositors. The Government will draft a final bill providing for the increase in the bank’s statutory capital, which will be submitted to Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Premier voiced hope that a parliamentary commission of inquiry will identify the persons to blame for the situation created at this bank. “The capital was diminished with the aim of weakening Banca de Economii,” said Vlad Filat, adding the people should know who took out the delinquent loans. Asked by Communist MP Igor Muntean if Victoriabank was among the banks that took out those loans, Vlad Filat said he will answer this question in private. Unaffiliated MP Igor Dodon asked the Premier if he will tender his resignation of honor if the situation at Banca de Economii does not improve. Vlad Filat said any problem in Moldova can be solved by definite actions. Vlad Filat was also asked by Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu if he knew about the incompatibility of the position of Premier with the post of chairman of the National Commission for Financial Stability, which was highlighted by IMF experts. He answered that he does not see what the incompatibility resigns in. “An international technical commission held discussions on the issue, but Moldova is an independent state and the decisions do not come from outside,” said Vlad Filat. The situation at the only bank controlled by the state became tenser after reports showed that the bank in 2012 sustained losses of 313 million lei. According to experts, an injection of 700 million lei is needed to remedy the situation.
