The expert of “WatchDog” Association Valeriu Pașa said the leader of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc did calculations and probably saw that the snap elections even if these are held under the mixed electoral system are not a scenario that would suit him fully. In an interview for RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service, the civic activist said the leader of the PDM is thus ready to sacrifice his own political child – the PSRM and Igor Dodon – which is the political project created by him and raised by Russia through his support to maintain stability, IPN reports.
The Democratic Party decided to invite the Socialists to a dialogue, saying it is even ready to concede the post of Parliament Speaker, while the Socialists responded they need to convene the party’s National Council to take a decision. Valeriu Pașa anticipates the formation of a PSRM-PDM government coalition. According to him, if the Socialists are persuaded to vote together with the PDM and to form this government majority, it will be evident that this is done to keep the power.
According to the activist, the PDM evidently can accept anything and can even concede the post of Prime Minister and all the posts in the Government. Anyway, this will change absolutely nothing. “For him, (Vlad Plahorniuc), the PSRM during three years was the perfect find for scaring the Western partners with the Russian tanks. Now he will not have this scarecrow and this does not suit him. But he probably calculated that the snap elections imply more risks given the developments in the region, in Romania and in Ukraine, and the tiredness of the own party and of the people. So, the results cannot be anticipated even if you possess all the administrative resources,” stated Valeriu Pașa.
He also said that when the Democratic Party remains without administrative resources, it will win not even the tenth part of those single-member constituencies it would win under the mixed electoral system. If the proportional representation system is restored, it is not clear if it passes the election threshold as the PDM does not have people who really support it.
