Vladimir Voronin suggests Moldova should join Euroasian Union

The chairman of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin urged the Alliance for European Integration to initiate discussions on Moldova’s entry into the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union, which is known as the Euroasian Union, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference on October 5, the Communist leader said he decided to put forward such a proposal after he read an interview with Russia’s Prime Minister. Vladimir Putin said he was convinced that Moldova would be admitted into this union. Moreover, it was expected to join it. “The PCRM is ready to open such a dialogue in order to work out a plan for modernizing Moldova. The longer Moldova delays the entry, the weaker will be our starting positions,” said Vladimir Voronin. He said the chance that is offered to Moldova through the entry into the Euroasian Union is historical and will help it overcome the crisis. On January 1, 2012, the Euroasian Union will become a common economic area and this project is important for Moldova because it would hasten the negotiation of a visa-free regime with the European Union, stated the Communist leader.
