Volcanic ash cloud prevents foreign delegations from coming to Chisinau

A number of events involving foreign delegations that were set to take place today, April 19, in Chisinau, were canceled due to the volcanic ash cloud that paralyzed air traffic, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Finish delegation headed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb, who was to pay an official visit to Moldova at the invitation of Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca, could not get to Chisinau, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration informs. The fifth meeting of the Moldovan-Romanian intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation and European integration that was to take place in Chisinau on April 19 and 20 was postponed, the Economy Ministry's press service has said. The visit of the Moldovan delegation led by Deputy Speaker Iurie Tap to Lithuania was canceled. The visit scheduled for April 19-22 had to be the first of the five organized as part of the Parliamentary Training Program implemented by Lithuania's Seimas in cooperation with the International Republican Institute in Vilnius. The Moldovan airspace is still closed. The ash could take a number of days to disperse, although it is not known how long disruption to airspace will last. Volcanic ash, which consists of the pulverized rock and glass created by the eruptions, can jam aircraft machinery if a plane flies through the plume, shutting down the engines.
