We have good legislation, but it is not appropriately implemented

The legislation on consumer protection in Moldova is sufficiently good, but there are shortcomings as regards the implementation of the legal provisions and the reaction of the consumers whose rights are violated, Deputy Minister of Economy Octavian Calmac said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “A decision is taken during a rather long period of time and costs as much and the consumers are disappointed by such a way of resolving the problems,” the deputy minister said in a roundtable meeting that focused on the consumer rights. Anatolie Silitrari, the head of the Economy Ministry’s Consumer Protection and Market Surveillance Division, said that the consumers in Moldova are protected. “We have an appropriate legal framework and laws that lay down consumers’ rights and authorities’ obligation to protect them,” he stated. The official stressed that the number of calls to the Consumer Protection Agency’s hotline is on the rise. “According to our information, over 2,500 calls are made during a year. There are submitted 880 petitions. We also cooperate with public associations,” said Anatolie Silitrari. The petitions apply to different areas - from food products to services. The roundtable meeting was held within the Consumer Week that is taking place in Moldova this week on the occasion of the World Consumer Rights Day, marked on March 15.
