Young people pay increased attention to higher education, study

The young people devote increased attention to higher education. According to students, the higher education offers increased possibilities of self-accomplishment and socio-professional integration, facilitates the employment, contributes to the formation of continuous studying skills and to increased access to well-paid jobs, says a study presented by the Center for Demographic Research of the National Institute for Economic Research, IPN reports.

The study shows the perceptions concerning the “best professions” differ depending on gender, except for the profession of programmer. Boys lays emphasis on such professions as engineer and entrepreneur, while girls are more interested in such professions as economist, doctor, jurist, manager or administrator. The young people choose the profession depending on particular factors, such as the family traditions, while others give priority to the prestige of the profession, personal wishes or the provided financial viability.

About 59% of the students said they visited websites to find information about the correct choice of the profession or specialty. For 54% of those polled, the family was an important source of counselling and guidance. Only 26% of them received information about the correct choice of the profession at school. The centers specialized in professional counseling were the least popular. Only 15% of the young people benefitted from their services.

The young people consider that to become a good specialist, having confidence and courage, making effort and showing critical thinking, innovative sprit, logical thinking and spirit of bservation are the important things. About 59% of the interviewed students realize that they must have a responsible attitude to their professional formation. Some 57.7% said they must become involved in different internships, while 56% said they should study well.

Owing to the economic situation, about 81% of the polled students intend to work while studying.

National Institute for Economic Research vice director Olga Gagauz said the number of students is expected to decrease significantly during the next few years. It is estimated that the reduction will be of about 20,000. This will also lead to a reduction in the number of higher education establishments.
