After 40 years of neglect, the building of the former Girls' Gymnasium on Mateevici Street will be rehabilitated

The main building of the former Girls' Gymnasium founded by Baroness Yulia von Gheyking, which is a historical monument and is located at 85 Alexei Mateevici Street, is to be rehabilitated. A project to this end has been announced by the Culture Ministry and will be carried out in cooperation with the German Embassy in Moldova, IPN reports.

The building was built between 1886-1887 and was originally owned by V.I. Shmitov, a nobleman and licensed lawyer.

This two-storey stone building is in an advanced state of decay, having been damaged by earthquakes in 1977 and 1986. Following these earthquakes, it became non-functional and has not been used for 40 years.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the building retains significant historical and cultural value.

The project envisages the restoration of the facades through cleaning, consolidation and restoration works, as well as the reconstruction of damaged decorative elements. Particular attention will be paid to the preservation of the surface and ornamental details that have remained intact. To protect the stone and prevent further deterioration, special hydrophobization solutions will be applied. Irreparably damaged decorative elements will be replaced with reproductions made according to the original techniques, thus ensuring the authenticity of the monument.

At the initial stage, until the finalization of the technical implementation project, the German Embassy will implement measures to strengthen the existing structures, thus ensuring their protection and stability.
