Almost half of persons caring after children younger than five do not realize domestic risks, study
About half (45%) of the persons that look after children younger than 5 are not aware of the domestic risks that endanger children’s lives, says a study presented on August 25. The adults in one in five families said they do not always see and hear the babies who they care for. One child in three is left without supervision for more than 5 minutes, while one child in ten – for even half an hour, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The target group of the study was the parents, grandparents and other persons looking after children younger than 5. It aimed to assess their knowledge of child injury in domestic conditions.
Most of the respondents (48%) realize that the children can get injured by falling, being hit or stung, not yet other risks. The risk of poisoning is realized by only 2.6% of those questioned, while the risk of drowning – by 1.7% of them.
The study shows that the drugs in every fourth family with children younger than five are kept at a distance smaller than 1 meter from the floor, while one in three families keep the poison for rats and insects, fertilizers, caustic cleaning products and detergents in the same conditions.
Each fourth questioned adult considers that their homes are exposed to the danger of fire. But only 11.5% of the families have extinguishers, while 5.8% - with fire alarm.
The study form part of the nationwide communication campaign “A Home without Dangers for Your Child!” conducted as part of the Moldovan-Swiss project “Regionalization of Emergency Pediatric and Intensive Therapy Services in Moldova”, which is implemented with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. It covered a sample of 1,230 respondents from rural and urban areas and was carried out between June 25 and August 15. The margin of error is plus-minus 2.9%.
