Historians mark Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism
The Association of Historians of Moldova, the National Museum of Archeology and History, the Institute of History, State and Law of the Academy of Sciences, and the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the State University of Moldova Monday staged a roundtable meeting themed “August 23 – European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, Info-Prim Neo reports.
At the opening of the meeting, acting chairman of the Association of Historians of Moldova Gheorghe Negru said that in accordance with the European Parliament's decision of 2008, August 23 was designated as European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, and this decision points to the geopolitical impact of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact.
Attending the event, First Deputy Prime Minister Ion Negrei said Moldova has not yet condemned the Communist regime as it did not have enough political, intellectual and moral forces.
“Only this year, Acting President Mihai Ghimpu issued a decree to set up a commission for studying the totalitarian Communist regime in Moldova so that the Parliament could later adopt a decision to condemn it. Unfortunately, the political forces in Moldova are not yet ready to condemn this regime,” Ion Negrei said.
