Embolism is the cause of the death of the pregnant woman who died at the end of January at the maternity hospital in the Edinet district. Health Minister Ala Nemerenco has announced about it, noting that the condition is extremely rare, IPN reports.

"There is the finality of the medical investigation. It lasted, because we also waited for the final result that comes from the forensic expertise. The conclusion of the commission and forensic doctors is that in this case it was an embolism," the minister told the program "Spatiul Public" on Radio Moldova.

According to the minister, embolism worldwide has a very low survival rate. The condition is the blockage of an artery by a foreign body, such as a blood clot or an air bubble.

"But during the course of the investigation we identified a lot of deficiencies. It is very difficult for me to say whether the absence of these deficiencies would have influenced the avoidance of this case. Because even science cannot understand. These cases happen very rarely. In North America it is one case in 70-80 thousand births, in Europe - in 30-40 thousand births", Ala Nemerenco said.

According to her, the identified deficiencies refer to shortcomings, deviations from protocols, violations, etc. As a result of the investigation, the Ministry of Health has recommended to the hospital administration some punitive measures for the medical staff.

"We expect the administration to comply with these recommendations, because we at the Ministry do not have the right to take measures against the medical staff, as they are under contract with the administration of the institution. I have presented the information note to the hospital management and I hope that they will take it into account," the minister added.

The case occurred at the end of January. The 32-year-old woman was giving birth for the third time. She died suddenly and doctors initially said she had gone into cardiac arrest. Her family accused the medical staff of negligence.
