54% of the respondents of a sociological survey carried out by the Institute for Public Policy (IPP) believe that the men and women in Moldova are treated equally. At the same time, over 90% of those polled agree that the women are housekeepers, while almost 90% said the men must do hard physical work. The poll that centered on the phenomenon of discrimination in Moldova was presented in a news conference at IPN.

IPP director Arcadie Barbarosie said that 80% of those surveyed consider that namely the men must earn money, while the women should do the housework. 70% of the respondents agree that a woman is no accomplished if she does not have family and children.

20% of those interviewed said the women should not become involved in politics. Almost half of the respondents consider that there are enough women in the Government and Parliament. Over 20% consider that the women are less capable than men and should not hold important state posts.

Almost 60% of those polled believe that the post of sector policeman must be occupied by a man. According to the respondents, the women are most often discriminated when they look for a job and at the workplace. Over 90% of the respondents think that equality of chances between women and men means equal rights, understanding in the family and taking of decisions in concert. More than 52% of those surveyed consider that there is real equality between men and women in Moldova.

The survey was conducted between June 27 and July 8, 2014. It covered a sample of 1,070 people older than 18 from 84 settlements. The margin of sampling error is 3%. The poll forms part of the project “Efficient policies and mechanisms for combating discrimination” that is supported by the U.S. Department of State.
