The school in Plopi village of Cantemir district will be closed due to the small number of students. In the program “The Fourth Power” on N4 channel, Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun explained that the decision was taken by the Cantemir District Council, which considers that the students will have access to better education in another educational institution, IPN reports.
The official noted that the secondary school in Plopi has only 57 students, and the small number of children in each class affects the quality of the educational process.
"What does a secondary school attended by 57 children mean? This means three children in the second grade, seven children in the fourth grade. It means simultaneous education in which the subject is taught for the entire primary cycle at the same time," said Minister Perciun.
For the students from Plopi to continue their studies, the district authorities provided a minibus to transport them to the nearest school.
"The Cantemir Council probably considers that this decision is for the benefit of children so that they have access to a school that ensures performance, where a foreign language is taught. As far as I understand, the council provides a minibus. The distance is 13-14 kilometers," explained Dan Perciun.
The official said that teachers who are not of retirement age will be hired by other educational institutions.
"Every time the councils seek to find solutions for teachers as well. I would expect Plopi to have a significant proportion of teachers of retirement age. As for those who continue and want to work, I hope that the District Council will make every effort to provide them with the necessary hours in the institution where the children will go," said Minister Perciun.
The situation is not unique. The secondary school in Dolna village of Straseni district is also to be closed due to the small number of students. The Straseni District Council, which took the decision, says that the school is attended by 84 students, and estimates show that this number on September 1 will drop to 73.
