American senators: U.S. supports Moldova’s modernization efforts

U.S. Senators John McCain and Ron Johnson said they support the democracy, sovereignty, territorial integrity and diversity in the mass media in Moldova. The officials had a meeting with the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat, who is paying a visit to the United States, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué of the PLDM, the discussions centered on Moldova’s European course and the situation in the region. The U.S. senators expressed their concern about the events in Ukraine and the impact they can have on the region.

The interlocutors also discussed the coming parliamentary elections in Moldova. The senators welcomed the visit to Washington paid by the leader of the PLDM in an important period, when debates in support of the region of which Moldova forms part are held in the United States.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko also paid a visit to the U.S. in the period. He told the U.S. senators that Ukraine needs lethal and non-lethal American weapons not for war, but for discouraging the aggressor. The head of the neighboring state added that Ukraine needs the support of the U.S. not for its politicians, but for the young people who fight for freedom and democracy and for Europe.
