Anniversary meeting of Moldova-North Carolina bilateral cooperation committee

The partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the U.S. state North Carolina is about diplomacy, about people, about exchange programs and projects covering a number of issues. These include the academic, research, economic, medical, cultural, defense, agricultural and other sectors. The statements were made at the anniversary meeting of the bilateral cooperation committee between Moldova and North Carolina, which was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IPN reports.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the Moldova-North Carolina Partnership was launched in April 1999 by signing a Memorandum of Intent. On Tuesday, the updated version of the memorandum is to be signed, with extension for another five years.

“The achievements of this partnership are truly remarkable. The very good achievements not only strengthen the strategic dialogue between the two countries, but also serve as inspiration for partnerships in new areas of cooperation. Today’s meeting is an opportunity to discuss our achievements and use our visionary approach to plan for the future,” noted Mihai Popșoi.

U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Kent D. Logsdon said that this partnership, being a dynamic one, reached its 25th anniversary, expanded and evolved taking into account the occurring changes. “Over time, the Republic of Moldova has transformed from a young democracy and there have been difficult times. But now we are preparing to open negotiations for accession to the European Union,” said the ambassador.

According to him, North Carolina is an important element of the partnership between the U.S. and Moldova. “We bank on North Carolina to help us with our mission to create a future that is more democratic, prosperous and secure for all Moldovans,” stated Kent D. Logsdon.

North Carolina Secretary of State, co-chair of the Moldova-North Carolina bilateral committee Elaine Marshall, said that since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine and this invasion has tested democracy, the partnership between Moldova and North Carolina is very important. However, Russia’s invasion close to Moldov’'s borders caused multiple crises.

The partnership was launched on April 22, 1999 by signing a Memorandum of Intent aimed at facilitating cooperation in the economic, cultural, scientific fields, academic exchanges, defense and civil protection, coordination of humanitarian efforts of various governmental institutions and nongovernmental organizations.
