BCS criticizes indexation of pension by only 6%

MPs of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) argue that the indexation of pensions by 6% on April 1 is not enough. They accused the government of using “vicious methods” in the process of indexing pensions, IPN reports.

MP Alla Darovannaya told a press briefing that more than 700,000 citizens are waiting for the indexation of pensions on April 1, as the law provides. She referred to Article 47 of the Constitution, which stipulates that the state is obliged to ensure that everyone has a decent standard of living that ensures their health and well-being, including food, clothing, housing, medical care, and the necessary social services.

“In 2023, the pension was not indexed to the price growth index, which was 30.24%. For this year, the Government announced that it will index pensions and social allowances by only 6%, although consumer prices in 2023 compared to 2022 increased on average by 13.4%. At the same time, indexation will apply only to the part of the pension that does not exceed the average monthly salary in the economy, forecast for 2024,” said the parliamentarian.

“We request the indexation of pensions in accordance with the draft law that was registered in the parliamentary procedure by the BCS, namely to the 15.76% indicator in the formula stipulated in this bill,” stated Alla Darovannaya.

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft  decision according to which pensions will be indexed by 6% on April 1. This coefficient will be applied to the part of the pension that does not exceed the average monthly salary in the economy forecasted for 2024 (13,700 lei). Also, social insurance benefits and particular types of state social welfare will be indexed by 6%.
