The Communist Party (PCRM) is not the opponent of the Liberal Party (PL). In a news conference on June 2, the PL’s candidate for mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said his main rival is the old mentality of the inhabitants of Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports “Our opponent is neither the PCRM nor their candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau. The Communists are desperate liars, who are in agony. My real rival is the old mentality anchored in the Soviet past that persists in Chisinau municipality and in Moldova,” said Dorin Chirtoaca. He stressed that the PCRM uses and exploits the old mentality of the residents of Chisinau to promote their group and financial interests. “The PCRM and their supporters do not care if we do something in the municipality of Chisinau or not. They do not like our way of thinking and the things we promote – the European orientation of Chisinau and Moldova, the orientation to freedom and democracy. This bothers them even if we achieve results,” said the Liberal candidate. Dorin Chirtoaca said the election campaign was full of lies. “We witnessed again a dirty campaign because some of the candidates do not have arguments and resort to lies to promote their image,” he stated. The Communist candidate for mayor Igor Dodon replied that Dorin Chirtoaca plays the victim. “My major opponents are the problems of Chisinau municipality, not Chirtoaca or other persons. Chirtoaca makes only accusations, like Ghimpu. He makes a victim of himself. He has done it during four years,” he said. On June 5, the voters in Moldova will elect the mayors and district and local councilors.
