Dumitru Diacov: We do not want to repeat mistakes of 1999-2000

The leader of the Democratic parliamentary group Dumitru Diacov said he has a lot of objections to the acts of his colleagues from the alliance and his own actions because he is not sure about the necessity of the constitutional referendum planned by the ruling alliance for this spring. “We did some foolish mistakes in 1999-2000 and I don’t want them to be repeated,” Dumitru Diacov said in the program “Special edition” on Publika TV, Info-Prim Neo reports. Speaking about the AEI’s decision to hold a constitutional referendum to modify the procedure for electing the President and transform the government regime into an authentic parliamentary one by the end of April, Dumitru Diacov said this decision is a very difficult one. ”I tried to convince my colleagues from the alliance to think things over. The early elections will bring the same parties in Parliament and there is a risk that we will be unable to elect the head of state again. Why should we push again the country towards early elections?” asked the MP. He said the parties will submit their own proposals and in the end will reach a consensual decision as regards the amendments that must be made to the supreme law. Commenting on the statements that the alliance may abandon the idea of holding a referendum, Dumitru Diacov said there are now no preconditions for such a decision. The head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said the decision to hold a referendum wasn’t taken in a hurry. ”The idea appeared last spring, when we saw that it wasn’t possible to elect the head of state, but it was then too early to organize a plebiscite, after the November 28 parliamentary elections and with the local elections coming. Before taking such a decision, we consulted experts in constitutional law. We have a strategy for amending the Constitution, not only the article concerning the election of the President,” said Valeriu Strelet. Ion Hadirca, the leader of the Liberal parliamentary group, said the AEI takes legal steps. “The alliance is to remedy things as regards the constitutional reform. The voters will also have to assume a part of the blame as they did not take an active part in the previous referendum (on September 5, 2010 – a.n.). In the autumn of 2009, I suggested modifying slightly the article on the election of the head of state, but there was chosen the way of drafting a new text,” he stated. After several failed attempts to elect the President, the ruling alliance announced it decided to hold a constitutional referendum. This decision aroused the dissatisfaction of organizations and political parties. There were staged a series of protests.
