The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has communicated to the Moldovan Government the case of former President Igor Dodon against Moldova. The former head of state complained to the ECHR about the violation of the right to a fair trial and of the right to free movement, IPN reports.
“For me, a person who held a number of public positions, this cannot be a reason for pride and joy. The fact that I had to go to the ECHR to seek justice and to ascertain the abuses committed by the ruling politicians in our country in complicity with their puppets in justice, doesn’t make me happy,” said the leader of the Party of Socialists.
“I accepted to go to the European Court only at the insistence of my lawyers, who warned me that justice in general, judges and prosecutors in my case, is under enormous pressure and that I have no chance of benefiting from a fair trial. This was even more visible, given that the government appointed at will and in violation of any democratic norms “temporary” and docile judges at the Supreme Court of Justice, judges who judged my case. The conduct in principle and the decisions that were adopted by these judges confirmed the fears of my lawyers.”
Igor Dodon also said that he didn’t sue for damages. “For me, it is important that the human rights violations be identified and that these findings come from a truly notorious international jurisdiction in the field of protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. I would really like my case at the ECHR, as well as others like it, submitted by our people in Strasbourg, to finally make our judges and prosecutors understand that they are not instruments in the hands of politicians, but are institutions of law enforcement and protection of human rights,” stated the Socialist leader.
Igor Dodon was charged with passive corruption, acceptance of funding for the political party from a criminal organization, treason and illicit enrichment. He previously said that he was accused based on political orders.
