The geopolitical factor will prevail at the May 20 early mayoral elections in the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti. Furthermore, the pro-European parties will bear great responsibility in this election campaign. The issue was developed in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
Political analyst Igor Volnitski said the geopolitical factor will prevail at the mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality, also because parliamentary elections will take place this year. Also, 2018 is the year of the centenary of Bessarabia’s union with Romania. “This will again divide the citizens of Chisinau into two distinct camps. Consequently, we cannot run away from this geopolitical factor. The radicalization of society in order to prepare for the parliamentary elections already takes place and this surely influences the early elections in Chisinau and Balti,” stated the analyst.
Ex-MP Stela Jantuan noted that the upcoming elections in the municipality of Chisinau will be different from the previous ones and will be unpredictable for the political competitors. “I think the geopolitical factor will matter in these elections, but there will yet be a combination between the candidate’s managerial skills and his background and the geopolitical orientation will rank second. I believe the profile will matter for the inhabitants of Chisinau,” she stated, adding that the upcoming the election campaign will represent a responsibility mainly for the pro-European parties, which are the result of the protest movement initiated at the beginning of 2015, while the result of the municipal elections will be a projection of the parliamentary elections.
The head of the Liberal group on the Chisinau Municipal Council Ion Cebanu said the Liberals’ candidate for mayoralty Valeriu Munteanu will definitely reach the runoffs. “We consider we have all the chances to reach the runoff vote and beat the Socialists, and to have a clear projection for the legislative elections. Valeriu Munteanu does not come to serve until autumn. He comes to continue the initiated projects and comes with new projects, for a five-year term,” stated Ion Cebanu.
