The problem of languages spoken in the Republic of Moldova, the legislation related to this and the discussions on the language of interethnic communication are a “trump card” used to distract attention from social problems. These discussions are aimed at further dividing Moldovan society. The opinions were stated in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“The current parliamentary majority and those who are for the European integration will always keep this trump card up their sleeve so as to confuse society. I hope those forces that will come after the elections will settle this matter and the Moldovan language will be ultimately  legitimized, Russian will be declared language of interethnic communication and other languages, such as Gagauz, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian, will also be put up for discussion,” said jurist Sergey Mișin.

Political analyst Roman Mihăeș said the Republic of Moldova is Europe’s champion in defending national minorities. He reached such a conclusion after studying the legislation of a number of countries, both from the East and from the West. Moldova has a very good linguistic legislation. “We have a strategy on national minorities written with the assistance of European experts. The document stipulates the rights of minorities concerning the language, but the most important thing is the fact that we have a census of 2014 saying the Ukrainians represent 8.6% of the population, the Russians 5-6%, the Gagauz people 0 4%, etc.” stated Roman Mihăeș.

Former MP Mihail Sidorov said the Moldovan legislation on national minorities is considered appropriate, but multilingualism is destroyed in Moldova, mainly the Russian-Romanian bilingualism.
