15% of couples of reproductive age experience sterility

About 15% of the Moldovan couples of reproductive age are infertile, with the recent studies showing that the infertility rate is going up. The reasons are the widely spread sexual transmitted diseases and the abortions performed in unsafe conditions. The fertility coefficient among women and men is 1:1. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, gynecologist of the National Reproductive Health and Medical Genetics Center Victoria Cibotaru said that the late formation of families and the sexual relations with the often change of the sexual partners worsen the situation even more. As a result, more than a half of the couples that plan to have a child encounter risk factors that hinder the conception of children or the physiological development of the pregnancy. The specialist also said that there is no national system for monitoring the infertile couples. Only the National Reproductive Health and Medical Genetics Center keeps a record of these couples. In 2005-2009, the number of sterile couples that sought help increased by 30%. “A part of the costs for diagnosing and treating infertile couples are covered by the health insurance system. The costs related to the counseling of patients and the laparoscopic treatment are included in the common package of the National Health Insurance Company. But the patients must pay the costs of hormonal, immunological and microbiological laboratory diagnosis and to purchase the drugs needed for treating infertility,” said Victoria Cibotaru. Statistics show that in case of sterility the women are the first who make use of medical services, while the men are usually invited for investigations, diagnosis and treatment. In Moldova, there are six state institutions and three private one that are specialized in treating infertility.
