A 74-year-old woman was hit by a car at the intersection of Stefan cel Mare Boulevard and Sfatul Tarii Street, right on the pedestrian crossing. The old lady died in the hospital shortly after. Aurelia Mija, press officer of the Traffic Police Division, told Info-Prim Neo that the respective intersection is regulated by an intermittently yellow traffic light. The 27-year-old driver, from Singerei district, was supposed to yield to the pedestrian who was crossing the street in the designated place. According to the police, the road segment on which the accident happened is regulated by the adequate traffic lights, signs and road markings. For currently unknown reasons, the driver hit the pedestrian at full speed. The old lady was taken by an ambulance to the hospital, to the Intensive Care Section, but the woman passed away after about 4 hours. As result of the accident, a 48-old-woman, who was a passenger of the vehicle, also suffered injuries. Criminal proceedings were started on the case; on the charge of violation of traffic security or transportation means abuse by the driver, leading to the death of a person. The driver risks a sentence of 3 to 7 years in jail, and privation of drivers’ rights for a period of up to 4 years, if found guilty.
