Agricultural work on small lots is beneficial for elderly: expert

The people ardent for gardening, flower growing and fruit farming on small areas have the occasion to visit the 10th exhibition “Helping the gardener and the apiarist,” organized by the Association of gardeners “Demetra.” The action is sheltered during three days by the Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports. “About 25 members of the Association participate, mostly elderly people, who, besides an addition to their pension, also have this pleasure which lightens their existence,” Ion Ciocanu, the president of the Demetra Association, stated. “I don’t even want to speak about pension, I live on what I grow with my hands. And grandchildren regard differently their grandfather if he has money,” says Constantin Sainsus, a retired teacher of math and cultivator of the biggest gooseberry bushes from Moldova. The exhibition offers the opportunity to buy different kinds of fruit trees, seeds and seedlings, medicinal plants, honey and decorative plants. A kilo of honey can be bought for 40-50 lei, and a spawn of fruit tree varies, depending on the species, between 15 and 60 lei. “The prices are lower than on the market, because they are sold through no retailers,” said Sergiu Cernat, a producer of fruit seedlings. The participants think that the state should better support farmers of small areas. “Our partners from abroad are impressed with the way we get involved the elderly in social activities. Though the state must support us, it does almost nothing,” Ion Ciocanu added. The Association of gardeners “Demetra” was created in 1995 and registered in 1996. Annually, the Association organizes many sale exhibitions. At the beginning of June, the Association plans to organize an exhibition of cherry-tree growers.
