“Annunciation” Church condemns in vitro fertilization

The in vitro fertilization brings more death than life. The parents, doctors and lawmakers should repent of this sin, said priest Vasile Filat, bishop of “Annunciation” Church, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. In a news conference on Monday, the priest said the doctors in the UK were the first to use this method, when sperm is joined with a female egg so that a baby develops. In many cases, the sperm is taken from sperm banks, where it is kept frozen. The zygote is transferred to the woman’s uterus during 36 to 56 hours in the hope that it will survive. “During only two years, in 1998-1999, 70,000 human embryos died in the UK during fertilization and only 8,300 children were born. When the zygote is formed, a human being develops, whose life has the same value as the life of each of us,” said Vasile Filat. According to the priest, the doctors and the men and women who resort to in vitro fertilization realize that most of the embryos will die. “Only one or two in ten survive and develop into human beings. The doctors transfer more embryos to the womb in the hope that at least one of them will implant. Then the doctors resort to so-called ‘embryo reduction’, when a part of the embryos are killed so as to give one or two embryos the chance to develop. The removal of embryos from the body is abortion and murder,” said Vasile Filat. He also said that according to the Bible, only God can make a woman fertile or infertile. The same applies to men. Many women were infertile for a period and then God gave them children, as it is written in the Book of Psalms. Vasile Filat stressed that God will hold accountable all those who are to blame for the in vitro crime. In Moldova, this method has been used for 10 years and the couples pay by US$1,500 for a procedure. The priest considers that the couples who cannot have children should adopt orphans as they can thus save lives and will not give birth to one or two children after killing many others. The law on health protection in Moldova was adopted in 1995. The in vitro fertilization was legalized the same year.
