“Apa-Canal Chisinau” celebrates 121 years of foundation

SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” on December 12 marks 121 years of its foundation. The water supplier serves daily about 800,000 end-users in Chisinau municipality. On its 120th anniversary, the company received the Labor Glory Order, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the Chisinau public utility, the water supply and sewerage system of the municipality of Chisinau consists of stations for collecting surface and underground waters, about 2,000 km of water pipes, 1,000 km of sewers, 20 water pumping stations, 30 wastewater pumping stations, 4 wastewater treatment stations and other auxiliary installations.

In 1997, the EBRD provided a loan of US$22.8 million to SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” for rehabilitating water pipes. The French company SEURECA carried out the feasibility study “Water supply and wastewater treatment in Chisinau municipality”. Within the project, there was purchased equipment and software for the Geographic Information System. On November 5, 2012, SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” started to use the digital map of networks.

There was also worked out a five-year Priority Investment Plan aimed at meeting the company’s urgent needs. The works will be financed with a loan and grant to the value of €62.8 million provided by the EBRD and EIB. 30% of this money is intended for repairing the water treatment station.

The centralized water supply system of Chisinau municipality was put into operation on December 12, 1892. Designed by the famous architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, the water pipe was 35 km long and had a capacity of 200,000 water pails daily. For over a century, Chisinau has been provided with water by the same supplier. SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” employs 2,000 people. Its long-term assets are valued at 2 billion lei.
