Bessarabian students in Romania stage protests
The Iasi Association of Young Bessarabians has announced they will protest in front of the Romanian Immigration Office on November 12. The young people demand that the Romanian authorities annul the consular tax of 120 euros that they must pay yearly to get a permit of stay to study in Romania, the Association's president Dan Caranfil told Info-Prim Neo.
“The central authorities pursue a pro-Bessarabia policy, but the Romanians from the left bank of the Prut are treated as foreigners,” Dan Caranfil said. The consular tax was raised from the equivalent in lei of 60 dollars to 120 euros on June 19, 2009.
The participants will protest against the discriminatory official attitude towards the Moldovan citizens. They will put up umbrellas carrying the message “Don't Pretend that It's Raining”, meaning do not behave as if you do not understand. The protest will last for about ten minutes.
“We do not know how the Romanian authorities will react, but we want that this tax be annulled and that the Moldovan citizens studying in Romania do not meet with such barriers,” Dan Caranfil said.
Protests will take place simultaneously in Bucharest, Timisoara, Galati and Craiova.
