Building located on 24 Pushkin St claims Government attention

Prime Minister Vlad Filat promised the employees of the four creation unions based on 24 Pushkin St he will make sure that they have access to the building until the Supreme Court of Justice passes judgment, while the Ministry of Justice will provide legal assistance to the Ministry of Culture in the trial. The building where the four creation unions – the Theater Union, the Filmmakers Union, the Musicians Union and the Union of Craftsmen of Moldova - have their offices belongs to the Ministry of Culture. In September 2009, the state-run Impresario Agency leased the building out to the foundation Moldova's Future for a period of 29 years. Now, the foundation claims this building. According to the head of the Theater Union Sandu Grecu, the contract signed by the Impresario Agency and the foundation Moldova's Future is illegal. “This foundation appropriated the building situated at 24 Pushkin St, the Chisinau movie theater, the Moldovan Village park. Isn't it too much for these greedy people?” he asked. Representatives of the creation unions say a number of cultural activities, including international ones, are being hindered as the employees do not have access to the workplace. Attending the meeting, Minister of Culture Boris Focsa said the signed contract was not coordinated with the Ministry of Culture and thus the institution is now in litigation with the foundation. The Chisinau Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the foundation, but the decision was appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice. The case will be examined again in September. Mihai Cimpoi, the head of the Writers Union, spoke about the problems faced by the people of culture and proposed restoring the practice of giving state awards in culture and arts, increasing the pensions for the people of culture with special merits, etc. “It was a necessary discussion though it was delayed through my fault. But we agreed on a number of steps and measures. The problem arouse because the legal system is corrupt,” said Premier Vlad Filat, asking the creation unions to submit proposals to the Government so that they could find solutions. On July 19, about 300 employees of the four creation unions were not allowed to enter the building. Moldova's Future director Alexandr Mushchinski argued the creation unions did not sign lease contracts with the foundation and have debts of 800,000 lei.
