Businessman Veaceslav Platon charged on new count

Persecutors completed the investigation and sent to court one more criminal case against businessman Veaceslav Platon. This is accused of offering apartments in Chisinau, cars or by €5,000 to guards for allowing him to take banned actions during his meetings with lawyers, including for facilitating access to a mobile phone, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, it happened last December, when Veaceslav Platon was in the antechamber of the Buiucani office of the Court of Chisinau. He allegedly discussed with two guards of the

Special Destination Detachment “Pantera” of the Department of Penitentiary Institution, who escorted him to courts of law.

Passive corruption carries a penalty of six to 12 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 300,000 to 400,000 lei.

Veaceslav Platon was charged with swindle and money laundering that caused damage estimated at over 800 million lei to Banca de Economii. The prosecution reached the conclusion that the money obtained illegally as loans was transferred to the accounts of offshore companies to hide its origin. Later, a part of this money was used to repay loans raised from Moldovan banks. Veaceslav Platon pleads not guilty.

One month later, the prosecutors sent to court a new criminal case against the businessman, over swindle attempt committed by an organized criminal group.
