An officer of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC) was shot in the head during the arrest of a group of persons who smuggled contraband from Ukraine. He was rushed to the hospital in a serious condition, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Bogdan Zumbreanu, deputy head of the Center’s General Prosecution Division, told a news conference that this is the first case of the kind experienced during eight years of the foundation of the Center.
On April 11 at about 9pm, anticorruption officers went to search the house of one of the suspects. They entered the house and immobilized a person. Somebody fired a gun from the neighboring room. One of the officers was seriously injured in the head. It was later established that the gun was held legally.
The operation took place in Stefan Voda. The district prosecutor’s office opened a legal case over causing of serious injuries to officer. The person who shot is liable to 5 to 12 years in jail.
Prosecutor Vasile Morosan, of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, said there were arrested eight persons aged between 23 and 43 who are suspected of forming part of the group. Legal cases over smuggling were started against several of them.
