Chisinau is about to lose its best filter against polluted air

No more poplars will be planted in the capital city because the nurseries don’t breed any. According to the head of the municipal Association for Maintenance of Green Spaces Eliferii Haruta, the old poplars will be replaced with limes and maples, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The poplars cause some inconvenience 2-3 weeks a year, but they are the city’s best filter. They accumulate the most carbon dioxide from the air and release the most oxygen among all the tree species in our city. They are the true lungs of the city, as they are very effective in filtering the air”, said Haruta. The Green Spaces chief said that the drought affected poplars the most. These trees are the most prone to falling during hot and dry weather. Some are beyond 40 years, which is their average life in city conditions. Previously, a plan to remove all poplars was proposed. However, when the works began, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the 80% of people in Chisinau opposed the plan.
