Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca instructed the municipal subdivisions and enterprises to transfer their accounts from Banca de Economii, Unibank and Banka Sociala to other banks in connection with the irregularities identified at these institutions. In the February 9 meeting of officials of Chisinau subdivisions and services, the mayor said that owing to the situation at Banca de Economii, the European Investment Bank (EIB) suspended the transfer of money for the repair of three streets to the municipality of Chisinau, IPN reports.

Dorin Chirtoaca said the transfer of the accounts from the three banks in December was only recommended, but now he had to make a relevant order.

The mayor also said that the EIB suspended the transfer for the reason that Banca de Economii is under special administration regime. The bank asked opening another account so as to avoid the risk of the money no reaching the municipality.

The head of the Finance Division Veronica Herta said that following the request of the EIB, they opened an account at the National Bank of Moldova at the end of last week.

Under the law on public finances and budget-fiscal responsibility, foreign currency to the budgets that form part of the national public budget can be transferred through accounts opened at the National Bank of Moldova and at other financial institutions.
