Cigarettes valued at 600,000 lei confiscated at customs point

At Giurgiulesti-Galati border pass, the customs officers found 63,724 cigarettes packs hidden in a road tanker that refueled at an oil refinery in Ploiesti. The cigarettes were meant to be smuggled out of the country, Info-Prim Neo reports. The general director of the Customs Service Tudor Balitchi stated during a press conference on Friday, June 18, that the scanning system failed to discover the smuggled goods. This proves smugglers use modern technologies that allow them to avoid being detected by scanning systems. The hidden cigarettes were discovered after a detailed manual check-up. At the same customs point, 1,125 hidden cigarettes packs were found in a Mercedes vehicle. Ion Ceban, department head at the Customs Service, informed that at Ungheni-Cristesti border checkpoint another 8,600 cigarettes packs were discovered in the Chisinau-Bucuresti train. The action was coordinated with the Service of Intelligence and Security. The overall value of confiscated cigarettes is estimated at about 600,000 lei. In 2010, the Moldovan Customs Service confiscated 249,736 cigarettes packs and initiated 8 criminal proceedings.
