The Communist parliamentary group asked the Government to provide information about the measures taken to prevent the drying up of the Nistru River and the ensuing impact on the flora and fauna. The Communists warn that an ecological catastrophe can anytime be witnessed owing to the decrease in the level of water in the Nistru, IPN reports.
According to the Communists, near Valcinet village the Nistru can be crossed by walking, while near Sucleia the river became twice narrower and an island appeared near the dam in Naslavcea. The situation is not better near Cosnita village, where the water in the Nistrul fell so much that the width in parts deceased to about 1 meter.
“Such situations, even if no so critical, were witnessed the previous years too. But it happened closer to autumn, after long periods of drought in summer. That’s why the experts are concerned about the fact that the drying of rivers began in spring,” said the Communists.
According to them, the situation is even more worrisome because this year is expected to be especially dry and not only the capital city, but also other settlements could remain without water. The Nistru becomes drier because of lack of precipitation and because Ukraine keeps the necessary flow capacity and volume of water in the reservoir in Novodnestrovsk, which is above Moldova’s border. The ecologists consider the Ukrainian side could pump water from the Nistru in their reservoirs.
Owing to the low level of water in the Nistru, the supply with water of Chisinau could be anytime interrupted. The reserves are enough for supplying water during two days only. The flora and fauna are also affected. “When the level of water in the Nistru rises, the water spreads to valleys and marshes appear, where the fish reproduce. The lack of places for reproduction can lead to a reduction in the fish population in the Nistru,” said the Communists.
According to the MPs, the situation can improve if there is precipitation and if the Ukrainian side increases the volume of discharged water.
