CPJ condemns Tiraspol’s initiative to fine journalists

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) condemns Tiraspol's initiative to impose fines on foreign journalists, including those from the right bank of the Nistru River, who carry out journalistic activities in the Transnistrian region without prior accreditation, IPN reports.

According to the CJP, this initiative would make it much more difficult for journalists to work in a region that is known for not ensuring press freedom.

The organization stresses that journalists should have the right to move freely and report from the Transnistrian region so that the public is properly informed about local realities and problems.

The CPJ also notes that in recent years, it documented at least eight cases in which journalists were illegally obstructed or detained by representatives of Transnistrian bodies.
