CSM fails yet again to assemble after two-month hiatus

The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), the self-regulatory body of the Moldovan judiciary, could not assemble today due to a lack of quorum, as only 7 of its 12 members showed up.

CSM interim president Dorel Mustață told IPN the no-shows included Justice Minister Sergiu Litvinenco and Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo. Both chose to attend the meeting of the Superior Council of Prosecutors instead.

The CSM had 41 agenda items to discuss today. Among other things, the Council was supposed to examine the resignation requests of Judge Ion Muruianu of the Chișinău Court of Appeals and Judge Oleg Ciumaș of the Bălți Court of Appeals, as well as appeals against the decisions of the Disciplinary Board issued against several judges. Also on the agenda was a referral to the Constitutional Court regarding the constitutionality review of certain legal provisions concerning the grounds for dismissing judges.

After its last meeting in June, the Superior Council of Magistracy was due to meet on July 6, but the meeting did not take place owing to a lack of quorum.
