Customs officer, former prosecutor and policeman suspected of large-scale smuggling

A group formed of Romanian and Moldovan citizens is suspected of smuggling large amounts of cigarettes over the last two years. The police have 8 suspects and 2 are internationally wanted, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ion Bodrug, deputy chief of the Police Department of the Ministry of the Interior, announced at a press conference that the criminal group included an officer of the Customs Service, a former prosecutor currently working as a lawyer and an officer of the traffic police. According to the police data, the group used 20 transport units specially equipped for smuggling cigarette packs. One vehicle smuggled about 3500 packs. Ion Bodrug said that the smugglers gained €30,000 monthly with a single vehicle. The money was used for buying expensive cars and houses. Part of the money was invested in several businesses in Edinet. Some members of the group went on holiday to Ibiza and Saint Tropez with this money. Three people have been arrested, two are wanted and three other are investigated at large. The Customs Service sacked an inspector suspected to be involved in this group.
