Customs officer suspected of passe corruption
The head of the operative service of the Customs Service's “Nord” Division and an accomplice have been arrested on passive corruption charges. The customs officer is suspected of asking €3,000 from a person for allowing him to cross the border with undeclared electrical appliances and three airguns, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the Anticorruption Center.
According to the informer, the customs officer asked €1,000 from him for allowing him to cross, but without the guns. After a period, the customs officer contacted that person and told him he will get his airguns back if he paid €2,000 more. The money was transmitted in Balti town. The officer did not come to the agreed place. He sent an intermediary who was arrested when he took the €2,000.
The customs officer was arrested later. One of the airguns was found at his place. The other two have not been yet discovered.
The officer and his accomplice are held at the remand center of the General Local Division “Nord”. They face up to ten years' imprisonment and a fine and would be deprived of the right to hold a certain post and carry out a particular activity for two to five years.
