Detainee and his wife face up to 7 years in jail for traffic of influence

A man held in Penitentiary No.4 situated in Cricova town and his wife are suspected of swindling €4,000 out of a person by posing as lawyers. They face a fine of 20,000 to 60,000 lei or up to seven years’ imprisonment, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC). The two are investigated for traffic of influence. They are suspected of defrauding a person of €4,000, claiming they can help set free the woman’s partner held in the Bender-based Penitentiary No.12 as they have influence over persons holding responsible positions in the Prosecutor’s Office and the courts of law. On November 8, anticorruption officers and employees of Penitentiary No.4 caught the detainee’s wife in the act of taking €2,000 marked ‘CCCEC bribe’. According to the denouncer, the woman received the first tranche of €2,000 a month ago. The woman will be under arrest for 72 hours at the CCCEC’s remand unit.
