Director of Edinet forestry service and his son arrested on corruption charges

The director of the Edinet forestry service and his son were arrested on suspicion of passive corruption. The director’s son worked at the same company as a professional hunter. The two were placed under arrest for 72 hours initially, but the prosecutors on February 15 are to ask the court to extend the detention period to 30 days, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the criminal case was started first against the director. Last September, this asked for €3,000 from a person for hiring his son as a chef forester at the company. Later, the director’s son acted as an accomplice and met with the man who wanted his son to be employed as a forester and received the asked sum in two tranches. He was arrested when he received the second tranche. In his car, the prosecutors found a loaded firearm “Benelli” for which the man didn’t have a permit. This was confiscated.

The director was arrested in Lipnic village of Ocnita district, where he owns agricultural facilities. The prosecutors found a large number of hunter’s guns kept in inappropriate conditions at these facilities and in his personal car. A part of the arms didn’t have certificates of origin or permits allowing carrying them.

The two men face five to ten years in jail and a fine of up to 160,000 lei. They will also be banned from holding particular public posts for a period of seven to ten years.
