Disputes at Chisinau Central Market, traders block Columna St

The traders selling inside the Central Market of Chisinau got into a conflict with the vendors selling outside, on the sidewalk, saying they leave them without income. The first accused the latter of not paying taxes and of offering bribe to police officers. They blocked Columna St for several minutes and then the police convinced them to return to stalls, IPN reports.

At first the traders staged a protest in order to attract the authorities’ attention. But the protest degenerated into a dispute. The traders selling inside the market demanded that all the sellers should be put in the same conditions and pay taxes, threatening they will also start to sell on the sidewalk. The street vendors said there are not enough places in the market or they do not have many products and shouldn’t pay a selling place.

Protests were announced for tomorrow too.

About 700 persons sell products directly in the street near the Central Market of Chisinau every day. The administration says there are yet many free places inside the market. About 300 places remain daily vacant in the food sector, while another 230 places are free in the industrial goods sector.
