Dragobete’s Day in Chisinau will be celebrated with martsishors and folk elements

The persons who are in love are expected to the third DragoFest event that is dedicated to the Romanian holiday of love Dragobete on February 24. According to the organizers, besides the traditional music and dances, DragoFest will also include a program of customs and traditions and information about Dragobete. There will be staged a sale-exhibition of martsishors and folk elements, Info-Prim Neo reports. Master of Arts Valeriu Chiper said that Dragobete is the son of Baba Dochia, while the name of the holiday varies from region to region. The day is particularly known as ‘the day when the birds are betrothed’. It is around this time that the birds begin to build their nests and mate. They say that Dragobete is the protector of birds, while the holiday is closely related to fertility and revival of nature. According to the Romanian common belief, those who took part in the Dragobete festivities were protected against any sickness all yearlong. So, early in the morning, dressed up in their Sunday best, young people used to meet in the center of the village or in front of the church. If the weather was good, they would go singing in small groups to the forest, to look for snowdrops or other spring flowers, and if the weather was bad, they would gather at one's place to play games and tell stories. The DragoFest event will take place at “Eugene Ionesco” Theater. The exhibition will start at 19.00, while the fest at 19.30. Children and teens up to the age of 15 will have free access, while the others will have to buy tickets.
