Driver who killed 2 women in Ialoveni hit-and-run will go to jail
The driver who killed two women in a hit-and-run in Ialoveni last November will go to jail after the Prosecutor General appealed his non-prison sentence.
In a press release from the Prosecutor General's Office it was recalled that the women were waking on the side of a road respecting traffic rules when the accident occurred.
In September 2010 the Ialoveni District Court sentenced the driver to 6 years and 6 months' imprisonment and 4 years' suspension of his driving license. The defendant appealed and in November 2010 the Criminal Panel of the Chisinau Court of Appeals relaxed the sentence to 5 years' probation, ordering him to pay 20,000 lei in non-pecuniary damages to the victims' families plus court expenses.
In July 2011, the Prosecutor General appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice and as a result the sentence of the district court was upheld. The defendant was taken in custody in the courtroom and sent to prison.
