Dumitru Matcovschi admitted to reanimatology section of Chisinau hospital

Academician and poet Dumitru Matcovschi was transferred to the reanimatology section of a private Chisinau hospital after he was operated on the brain on June 14. Contacted by IPN, university lecturer and academician Stanislav Groppa said the poet’s state is grave, but stable.

Dumitru Matcovschi has a brain tumor caused by a number of factors, including a serious brain injury sustained as a result of a road accident that happened 24 years ago, the intense work done by him, and his precarious living conditions.

“A council of doctors convenes daily to discuss the poet’s state of health. Initially, Dumitru Matcovschi was admitted to a state medical institution, but was then taken to a private hospital in Chisinau for technical reasons,” said Stanislav Groppa, who is also the head of the council of doctors.

The doctors cannot yet say how long Dumitru Matcovschi will need to rehabilitate. He is now receiving intense treatment.

Poet, prose writer, dramatist, publicist and academician Dumitru Matcovschi is 73. He started to write in 1966 and is the author of more than 50 volumes of poetry, prose and plays. He is considered a symbol of the national renaissance movement of Bessarabia.
