The judges on June 16 did not manage to elect a new member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates because none of the candidates garnered the necessary number of votes. The seat remained vacant after Nicolae Timofti was elected President of Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Two candidates were fielded for the post of member of the Council – Supreme Court of Justice judge Sergiu Furdui, who was proposed by the Council’s chairman Mihai Poalelungi, and the president of the Botanica Court and head of the Association of Judges of Moldova Ion Druta, who was fielded by the Council judge Ion Arhiliuc
The voting involved 308 judges attending the General Assembly. Ion Druta gained 154 votes, while Sergiu Furdui - 148. Six ballots were invalidated. Thus, none of the candidates polled the necessary 50% + 1 vote.
Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim said that the date of the next General Assembly will be set soon. Under the legislation, new elections are to take place within 145 days.
