England beat Moldova 5:0
Moldova’s national football team kicked off the World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign with a heavy defeat at the hands of England. The Tricolors were outplayed on home soil 0:5 on Friday, September 7, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Englishmen attacked from the first minutes and opened the score just 3 minutes into the match, as Frank Lampard coolly converted a penalty kick. He netted again on 29 minutes and then Jermain Defoe bagged one more for the guests.
Simply outclassed by their opponents, the Moldovans conceded two more by the end of the game, as James Milner and Leighton Baines added their names to the score sheet. The last time Moldova suffered such a trashing was in away fixture in 2006, against Turkey.
This is coach Ion Caras’ third heavy loss at the helm of the national team against England after 0:3 and 4:0 defeats in 1998 World Cup qualifiers.
“The early goal broke our morale. Our defense line was the weak link today. England taught us a harsh football lesson”, Ion Caras told a news conference after the game. Roy Hodgson, for his part, was all smiles. “We are happy we started with an excellent result. I hope my players will have enough forces to play just as well in the next match”, added Hodgson.
In the other game of Group H, Montenegro and Poland produced a 2:2 draw. The next matches are scheduled for September 11: Poland vs Moldova, England vs Ukraine and San Marino vs Montenegro.
