The initiative group for organizing the referendum on Moldova’s entry into the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union staged a flashmob meeting at the Central Election Commission (CEC) on the occasion of the International Election Day. The participants accused the CEC of promoting the interests of political parties, not of the people. CEC chairman Iurie Ciocan replied to them, saying that by such acts some of the persons are trying to polish their image, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The representative of the initiative group Sergiu Coropcean said that during half a year they haven’t yet received explanations from the CEC why it didn’t validate the signatures gathered in favor of the referendum.
Asked to comment on Coropcean’s statements, Iurie Ciocan said that the central election authority didn’t violate the rights of this initiative group and wasn’t sued for breach of law.
On August 3, 2012, the CEC annulled 197,000 signatures of the initiative group collected within the campaign on the organization of the referendum. It validated only 34,000 signatures of those submitted.
