Four Department of Penitentiary Institution employees to stand trial

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) completed the investigation against four of the 15 employees of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions who are accused of favoring the work of the criminal organization “Makena”. The case will be soon sent to court, IPN has learned from the PGO.

This March, the prosecutors accused 16 employees of the Department of misuse of power and obstruction of justice. The head of the PGO’s press service Maria Vieru said the investigation against the other 11 employee goes on. The 11 persons include penitentiary workers and representatives of the Department’s administration.

They are accused of not fully ensuring the security of the detainees who cooperated with the prosecution bodies and helped elucidate this case, creating unbearable detention conditions for them and making them thus change their statements. This fact can lead to the annihilation of evidence based on which the members of the criminal organization “Makena”, headed by the so called thief-in-law Vladimir Moscalciuc, alias Makena, were convicted.

Last April, 11 detainees serving time in prison for committing serious and very serous offenses, were sentenced additionally to 175 years in jail together for blackmail, creation and management of a criminal organization. In order to create funds for supporting the organization and recruiting new members from among prisoners, the members of the criminal network blackmailed other detainees.
