Half million lei theft at Chisinau exchange facility

Two men stole from a currency exchange facility in Chisinau's Buiucani district. The administration told the police that they stole the equivalent of 578,000 lei. One of the suspects is a former employee of the facility. According to the Chisinau General Police Commissariat, the suspects have been held in the capital less than 10 hours after the theft. The young men, aged 19 and 20, planned to abscond to Odessa, Ukraine. During the hearings, the suspects confessed to have planned the hit. The 20-year-old man had previously worked as a cashier at this exchange facility and made a copy of the entrance door. He and his accomplice waited for the cashier to exit the exchange booth and then they entered the room. Afterwards, they rented an apartment for the night and prepared to leave the country. As a result of the searches in the rented apartment, the police found only €950 and $300. The duo claim they stole only the equivalent of about 25,000 lei in foreign currency. The police will examine the accounts of both the accused and the exchange administration. The thieves are charged with theft which is punishable by 7 to 12 years in jail.
